Foil curling and warping: what to expect
Modern foils curl. Books, rice, and dashboards are poor fixes. Here is what a studio can attempt and what will likely stay.
Foil and textured cards move with humidity and with how they were packed. A gentle curve out of the pack is common. A hard warp from a hot car or a stacked binder is a different shape. Flattening is not a reset button.
Why foils curl
The foil layer and the paper layer do not expand at the same rate. A dry room and a damp basement will not treat the card the same way. Storing a foil in a tight page can hide curl until you pull it out and it rolls.
That does not mean the card is wrecked. It means storage has to stay consistent.
What not to do
Do not iron it. Do not leave it on a dashboard. Do not press it under textbooks for a week and call that a treatment. Heat and uneven pressure create waves and impressions that look worse under grading lights than a mild curve in a loader.
A sleeve and a quality loader will hold many cards flat enough for a collection. That is often the whole answer.
What we may attempt
Some warping can be improved as part of a repair attempt. Results depend on the finish, the age of the warp, and whether the card also has creases. We will not promise a perfectly planar card, especially on modern textured foils.
Send an edge-on photo with the usual front and back shots. If the honest advice is “keep it loaded and skip the bench,” we will send that.
